Barring any last minute hitches, six (6) men and six (6) women’s teams comprising of hosts and defending champions in both men and women’s competitions South Africa, their neighbors Zimbabwe and Namibia, North African powerhouse Egypt, East African torchbearers Kenya and West African trailblazers Ghana and their neighbors Nigeria will converge in Johannesburg suburb of Randburg in a matter of days.
The occasion will be to fight for honors to determine who rules Africa Hockey at the Junior (U-21) level and which four teams join the World’s elite for the FIH Junior World Cup for both men and women. The competition starts on Saturday October 13 and ends on Saturday October 20. The South African Hockey Association (SAHA) led by its dynamic CEO Ms Marissa Langeni has ensured a thorough planning to guarantee that this African event is organized as a world class one. The AfHF has worked in collaboration with the FIH to confirm the Technical Panel for the two competitions which will be overseen by Walter Imoedemhe of Nigeria who will be the Tournament Director (TD) with Shiraz Yakub of Kenya managing the umpires. Shiraz will be assisted by Zain McLaren of South Africa. Four (4) neutral umpires selected by the European Hockey Federation (EHF) under the AfHF-EHF Protocol that encourages the exchange of officiating officials between the two Federations among other arrangements. The competition itself will be played in accordance with the Rules of Hockey as published by the FIH and will be guided by the FIH Tournament Regulations (Outdoor) of September 2012. Both competitions will be played on the one-pool basis with the top two clashing for the championship title and the others playing for classification in accordance with the regulations. Ghana men and South Africa women look good to dominate having dominated their contemporaries at the U-17 stage 2 years ago to represent Africa in the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. On the fringes of the competition, the Executive Board of the AfHF will also meet to deliberate on important issues and strategize for the future. The AfHF wishes all the participating teams success in their search for sporting glory.
