In a fashion that leaves many wondering, the Nigerian Hockey Federation has at the last minute thrown the smooth planning of SAHA for the Junior Africa Cup for Nations U-21 Competition into some difficulty with their inability to show up for the event. But for the quick thinking of the AfHF and SAHA, the situation could have been worse.

The Nigerian Hockey Association had consistently indicated one communication after the other that the teams were finalizing sponsorship and travel plans to be in South Africa until SAHA indicated their definite inability to travel due to the period required for the visa application procedures. The withdrawal of Nigeria leaves the competition with 5 teams in each category, a painful departure from the 7-men’s teams and the 6-women’s teams competitions considering that Namibia men and Libya men withdrew earlier.

Meanwhile all five women’s teams and 3 men’s teams have arrived and unpacking while some have hit the streets of Randburg to immerse themselves into the cultural dynamics of the township and savor the calm before the storm.

All look set for the competition to push-off on Saturday morning with Ghana and Kenya doing battle in the men’s competition. That will however be preceded on Friday with the Briefing to be held by the TD and the Umpires Mangers. Other pre-tournament activities planned by SAHA will also take place.
