KHUMALO Hockey Stadium in Bulawayo will host the African Cup of Club Championships from 1 – 8 December, a senior official of the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) has confirmed. Haz president Gavin Stephens told NewsDay Sport that the championships to involve clubs from top hockey playing countries in Africa would be in Bulawayo for a week long tournament.
“The African Cup of Club Championships (ACCC) will be held at the Khumalo Hockey Stadium, Bulawayo, as this is the only international hockey facility in the country. Preparations are well underway for what promises to be a week of good hockey. The club teams from the participating nations will comprise a high percentage of their national teams, and so good hockey is assured,” Stephens said.

Some of the countries expected to troop into the City of Kings in December for the competition are South Africa, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia and Zambia.  After refurbishment of the facility last year. Khumalo successfully hosted the 2012 London Olympics African hockey qualifiers last September. South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana and Morocco participated in the London Olympics qualifiers.

On Monday, Stephens said he hoped HAZ would next year conclude agreements with the government for the rehabilitation of Magamba Hockey Stadium in Harare so that the country could host International Hockey Federation (FIH) World Series (Round 2) in 2014 in the capital.
